Development OM

A central focus of my current research is what I call Development Operations Management. This subfield centers on developing and applying operational and supply chain strategies to strengthen social and institutional systems in developing countries. It tackles challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited resources, and weak institutions, with the aim of promoting inclusive growth, reducing poverty, and supporting long-term sustainability.

According to the International Monetary Fund, 152 countries—home to about 85% of the world’s population—are classified as emerging and developing economies. Yet, most research published in top journals of the field still focuses on industrialized nations. In a recent study, I found that only around 5% of published work in our leading journals addresses supply chain and operations challenges in developing countries.

As part of my efforts to promote this subfield, I launched and continue to lead the INFORMS Annual Webinars on Contemporary Operations in Developing Economies. This platform highlights research by colleagues in developing countries and fosters collaboration with them on projects that address pressing operational challenges in these contexts. Current Projects

My research explores key development challenges in low-resource settings, with recent projects focused on women’s empowerment, reducing food waste, and improving education outcomes in developing countries.
